But Campbell's condensed soups, which inspired Warhol to produce art from the mundane, are making a comeback on the supermarket shelves.

The range, which rolls out in Tesco stores from today and other retailers later in the summer, features familiar flavours from the original line-up including Cream of Mushroom, Cream of Tomato, Cream of Chicken and Cream of Celery, alongside new varieties such as Low Fat Chicken and Low Fat Mushroom.

The soups have been absent from British supermarkets since March 2008, when Premier Foods opted not to renew its licence to use the brand in the UK.

The Campbell's name returned to the aisles in January after Leeds-based dried food specialist Symington's teamed up with the U.S.-based Campbell Soup Company to produce a range of cup soups and rice and pasta products.

The Campbell's dry soup range has since captured a 6.6 per cent value share of the dry soup market and the companies have again teamed up to develop the canned products.

The condensed nature of the soup made it a favourite with cooks, who used the undiluted contents as a base for sauces and stocks.

Campbell's spokesman Mike Hollis said the company had received hundreds of calls from customers keen to see the condensed soups make a return.
